For the first time since 2005, Oconomowoc has dropped its season opener in LOL play. The O's fell to The Irish 5-2 on Sunday in Monches. Oconomowoc still had some winter rust on the gears as it played sloppy defense against the younger and sharp looking Irish. Oconomowoc was able to score in the top of the 1st when Jeff Rhoads led off the game with a single and was moved over to third on a one out single by Derek Nelson to right. Rhoads later scored on an error by Monches putting Oconomowoc up 1-0. Monches answered in the bottom of the first with a run of their own on a single up the middle by Brian Crook scoring Jim Landwher who reached after getting hit by a pitch. Monches took a lead in the bottom of the 3rd with a two out RBI single by Karl Sprung. The Five O's tied the game in the top of the 5th with a solo home run by Luke Nelson only to have Monches answer with a run in the bottom half making it 3-2 after 5. Things remained that way until the bottom of the 8th when Steve Schultz lifted a two-run home run to center off reliever Chris Fischer putting the score at 5-2.
On the mound Matt Schref took the loss for Oconomowoc going the first six innings allowing three runs on nine hits while striking out four and hitting one batter. Chris Fischer went two innings allowing two runs on four hits while walking one and striking out four.
Josh Bouche was the only player for Oconomowoc to have two hits, including a double. Luke Nelson had a home run while Steve Rhoads and Bob Bolson also each doubled in the loss.
The loss puts Oconomowoc at 0-1 in the LOL West. They open their Tri County season on Friday at Johnson Creek before returning to LOL play on Sunday hosting Merton at 1:00 pm.
