After a lack luster season opener in Monches last week the Oconomowoc bats came alive in their home opener with an 11-4 win over Merton on Sunday. The Five O's did not charge out of the gate however. Merton scored first with an unearned run in the top of the 2nd off starter Matt Schref. Oconomowoc tied the game with a run in the bottom after Brett Marshall reached on an infield single and went to second on a throwing error. After a sac bunt by Bob Bolson, Luke Nelson drove in Marshall to tie the game. Oconomowoc took a brief lead with another run in the bottom of the 4th with a solo home run by Derek Nelson putting the score at 2-1. Merton tied the game with a run in the top of the 5th before Oconomowoc exploded for seven runs in the bottom half of the inning. Steve Rhoads led off with a single and then two well placed bunts by Marshall and Bob Bolson loaded the bases up. Luke Nelson then stepped to the plate and belted a grand slam to left field. Still with noone out, Jeff Rhoads singled and Derek Nelson reached on an error which was followed by a three-run home run by Mike Mitchell. When all was said and done, Oconomowoc took a 9-2 lead which they would not relinquish.
Luke Nelson led the high powered offense going 3 for 5 with a grand slam, double and six RBIs. Brett Marshall was also 3 for 3 with four runs scored.
On the mound Matt Schref earned the win going seven innings allowing two runs (one earned) on six hits while walking three and striking out five. Chris Fischer threw the final two innings allowing two runs on three hits while walking two and striking out one.
The win puts Oconomowoc at 1-1 in the LOL West and 2-1 overall. They travel to Watertown on Friday to take on Pewaukee in Tri County action before returning to LOL play on Sunday with a 1:00 pm game at Hartland.
