Five O's Clinch First Place With 12-7 Win Over Lannon

8/2/2009
Oconomowoc battled back from a 6-2 defecit to beat Lannon on Sunday and clinch the #1 seed for the LOL West Playoffs. Oconomowoc jumped on the board early when Jeff Rhoads reached on an error in the top of the 1st and was brought home by back-to-back singles from Mike Mitchell and Derek Nelson. Lannon answered with two home runs in the bottom of the first making it 3-1. The Five O's pushed another one across in the 2nd making it 3-2 when Brett Marshall walked and was driven home by Luke Nelson. The Stonemen once again answered with two runs in the bottom half and then held Oconomowoc scoreless in the 2rd and scored another run making it 6-2. Oconomowoc was able to bat around in the 4th and pushed three runs across on three hits, two hit batters and a Lannon error. The score remained 6-5 until Oconomowoc capitalized once again on Lannon errors with four runs in the top of the 7th. Chandler Ziemann led off the inning with a single and an fielding error off the bat of Brett Marshall put runners at first and second with no outs. A fielders choice and flyout put two outs on the board in what appeared would be a missed opportunity for Oconomowoc. Jeff Rhoads then singled in the tieing run and then Derek Nelson blasted a 3 run home run to left center putting the score at 9-6. Lannon pushed one across in the bottom of the 8th but Oconomowoc squashed any hopes of a comeback with three insurance runs in the top of the 9th to end the game at 12-7.
On the mound Luke Nelson threw the complete game win allowing seven runs (six earned) on 11 hits while walking nine and striking out nine. Eric Rohe took the loss for Lannon. At the plate Oconomowoc was led by Derek Nelson who was 4 for 5 with a double, home run, hit by pitch and five RBIs. Mike Mitchell and Steve Rhoads had three hits each.
The Five O's play their final LOL regular season game of the year at home against Sussex on Saturday at 2:00 pm. The win against Lannon clinches the #1 seed for Oconomowoc in the LOL playoffs meaning they will receive a first round bye on Saturday, August 15 and will play the worst remaining seed on Sunday, August 16 at home. They are also allowed one loss in the playoffs meaning if they lose on August 16 or August 22, there will be a one game playoff on August 23 to determine who represent the LOL West in the Grand Championship beginning August 29.
