The Five O's opened up the 2010 season with a 10-5 victory over North Lake on Sunday. Oconomowoc exploded for 20 hits in the contest earning Justin Mortensen his first victory on the hill. Oconomowoc jumped to a 2-0 lead in the top of the 1st when Matt Huffaker led off the game by reaching on an error which was then followed by a double from Luke Nelson and single by Jeff Rhoads. It didnt take North Lake long to take the lead when they scored three runs in the bottom of the 2nd and another one in the 3rd to put them up 4-2. Each team traded runs in the 4th before Oconomowoc tied it at 5-5 with two runs in the top of the 5th. Derek Nelson and Mike Mitchell led off the inning with back-to-back doubles which was then followed by back-to-back singles by Steve Rhoads and Mike Bolson. Justin Mortensen settled down on the mound and cruised along when Oconomowoc scored three in the 6th and two more in the 8th to take a 10-5 lead which was capped off by a home run from Jeff Rhoads. After getting into some trouble in the bottom of the 8th, Steve Rhoads came in to retire the final two outs and then went 1-2-3 in the 9th to seal the win. Justin Mortensen earned the win for Oconomowoc going 7.1 innings allowing 5 runs (4 earned) on 6 hits while walking 8 and striking out 5. Steve Rhoads went 1.2 innings allowing no runs on no hits and striking out two. At the plate Oconomowoc was led by Steve Rhoads who was 3 for 5 with a double and 3 RBIs and Mike Bolson who was also 3 for 5. Jeff Rhoads and Derek Nelson were each 3 for 6.
The win puts Oconomowoc at 1-0 for the season. They open their Tri County Night League season this Friday in West Bend before their home opener next Sunday against Menomonee Falls at 1:00 pm.
