Five O's Win 2008 SWABA Tournament

7/25/2008 Print this page
The Five O's won the 2008 SWABA Tournament on Friday night by defeating The Brookfield Bulldogs 16-8. Led by another strong pitching performance by Tony Briggs and some powerful Five O's hitting, Oconomowoc is now 4-0 in SWABA championship games dating back to 1996 when they won their first title. Oconomowoc jumped on the board in the top of the 1st when Luke Nelson singled and scored on hits by Jeff Rhoads and Josh Bouche. Brookfield answered in the bottom of the 1st when lead off hitter Kris Franzen hit a solo home run. The Five O's then took a 3-1 lead in the top of the 3rd when Jeff Rhoads blasted a 2-run home run, his first of three home runs for the game. The lead did not last long after Brookfield scored five runs in the bottom of the 5th to put the score at 6-3. Oconomowoc then exploded for 13 runs in the 7th and 8th inning combined. In the innings Oconomowoc had four home runs: two by Jeff Rhoads and one by Steve Rhoads and Mike Barker. Brookfield was able to score two in the 8th but the damage was done as Oconomowoc closed out the game.
Tony Briggs threw a complete game for the win. Briggs earned all three wins in the tournament for Oconomowoc. Briggs allowed 8 runs (7 earned) on 11 hits with 4 walks, 6 strike outs and 1 hit batter. At the plate Oconomowoc was led by Jeff Rhoads and Luke Nelson, each who had 4 hits. Rhoads went 4 for 5 with 3 home runs, and 8 RBIs. Nelson went 4 for 5 with 4 runs scored and a walk.
