Being around all the great athletes from the Celtics and Yankees got Earl thinking not about continuing to coach, but about playing! He knew if he did attempt a turn at professional sports, he'd have to be in complete control, so he chose an individual sport: tennis.
He had many detractors, saying he was too old, and that had never even picked up a tennis racket. But 2 short years later, when he was celebrating his second consecutive Wimbledon title, Earl was finally able to put those negative comments behind him.
