The Five O's have clung onto playoff hopes with a wild and dramatic win over the Sussex Cardinals on Sunday in LOL play. Things did not start out well for Oconomowoc as Sussex jumped out to a 7-0 lead after 4 innings of play. Oconomowoc started chipping away at the deficit with a run in the top of the 5th on three straight singled by Chandler Ziemann, Luke Nelson and Jeff Rhoads. The added three more in the top of the 7th to make the score 7-4 off a two run home run by Jeff Rhoads and three straight two out hits from Derek Nelson, Josh Bouche and Steve Rhoads. Oconomowoc then was able to tie the game with three additional runs in the top of the 8th inning on only two hits. Sussex appeared to throw a wet blanket on the great comeback by Oconomowoc when they scored two runs in the bottom of the 8th aided by two Oconomowoc errors. Going into the top of the 9th, Oconomowoc once again found themselves having to come back. With one out in the top of the 9th, Bob Bolson singled to left. Chandler Ziemann then doubled to left center scoring Bolson and putting the tieing run at 2nd base. After a flyout to center by Luke Nelson, Chandler tagged up to third base and put the tieing run 90 feet away with two outs. Jeff Rhoads then doubled to right field scoring Ziemann and tieing the game. On the next pitch Mike Mitchell lifted a home run to left field putting Oconomowoc up 11-9. Luke Nelson retired Sussex in the 9th to seal the win.
At the plate Oconomowoc was led by Josh Bouche who was 4 for 5 with a walk and two RBIs and Jeff Rhoads who was 4 for 6 with a double, home run and four RBIs. This marks the 5th consecutive game Rhoads has hit a home run. Chandler Ziemann and Derek Nelson each had three hits in the win.
It was a busy day in the bullpen as Oconomowoc used four different pitchers in the win. Rob Becker started and went 2.1 innings allowing three runs on five hits while walking one. Luke Nelson relieved Becker and went 2.2 innings allowing four runs on eight hits while walking one and striking out one. Derek Nelson then came in to pitch 1+ inning allowing no runs on no hits while walking four and striking out one. Steve Rhoads earned his first LOL Win in over 16 years by going two innings allowing two runs (one earned) on three hits while walking one and striking out one. Luke Nelson then came in for his second appearance of the game to pick up the save throwing the last inning allowing no runs on one hit.
The win puts Oconomowoc at 8-9 in the LOL West and still with a chance to make the playoffs. With a win against West Bend next week and a loss by Monches and Brookfield Blue Sox, Oconomowoc will sneak into the 6th playoff spot.
