2009 Kicks Off With Five O's Win Over Monches

The Oconomowoc Five O's kicked off their 2009 campaign with a 7-5 win over the Monches Irish. The Five O's struck first in the top of the first inning with back-to-back 2 out doubles by Jeff Rhoads and Derek Nelson. After retiring Monches in the bottom of the 1st, Derek Nelson struggled with his control and was replaced by Luke Nelson in the bottom of the second inning. Monches did take advantage by plating three runs in the inning off only one hit. Things remained at 3-1 until Oconomowoc tied it the top of the 5th when Josh Fenzl struck a double to deep left in what would be his first of three hits on the day. He advanced to third on a double by Luke Nelson and then both were brought home on a single by Jeff Rhoads to right. The O's scored two more runs in the top of the 8th taking a 5-3 lead on singles by Fenzl and newcomer Serg Medina and a costly error in left. Monches fought back tieing it back up in the bottom of the 8th with two runs of their own. Derek Nelson led off the top of the 9th for Oconomowoc with a double to right center and later scored on an infield single by Mike Bolson. Bob Bolson, who came into the game running for Josh Bouche who drew a walk, then scored on a double steal attempt to put the game at 7-5. The Irish got two runners on in the 9th but were unable to do any damage and Luke picked up the win.
Derek Nelson went 1+ innings for Oconomowoc giving up 3 runs on no hits while walking three and hitting two batters. Luke Nelson came in to pitch the remaining eight innings for Oconomowoc giving up two runs while walking two and striking out an amazing 15 batters. Taking the loss for Monches was Andy Smith.
At the plate Oconomowoc was led by Josh Fenzl and Derek Nelson who had three hits each. Luke Nelson, Jeff Rhoads and Mike Bolson had two hits each.
The win puts Oconomowoc at 1-0 on the year and their next matchup is againt rival Lannon at home on Sunday. Game time is 1:00 pm.
