Big Offensive Weekend Leads to a Pair of Wins for O's

6/14/2009 Print this page
Oconomowoc's offense came alive in their two games over the weekend scoring 28 runs in 16 innings. The first matched up against Pewaukee on Saturday. Luke Nelson led Oconomowoc by throwing a complete game on the hill. After giving up a run in the top of the 1st, Oconomowoc took a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the 2nd on three hits, a walk and a hit batter. They then stretched their lead to 5-1 with two more runs in the bottom of the 4th on RBI singles by Jeff Rhoads and Derek Nelson. Pewaukee chipped away at the lead with two runs in the top of the 6th putting the score at 5-3 however three straight hits to lead off the bottom of the 6th by Luke Nelson, Jeff Rhoads and Derek Nelson led to three runs and a 8-3 score. Pewaukee scored their final run in the top of the 7th and Oconomowoc added three in the bottom half and two more in the 8th to put the final at 13-4.
Luke Nelson earned the winning going all nine innings allowing four runs on eight hits while walking five, striking out five and hitting a batter. At the plate Oconomowoc was led by Derek Nelson who was 3 for 5 with two doubles, a walk and six RBIs.
On Sunday the Five O's offense picked up right where it left off on Sunday with five runs in the bottom of the 1st off Menomonee Falls pitcher Don August. After one innings the score was 5-1 and stayed that way until the top of the 4th when Falls plated an unearned run off Chris Fischer. Oconomowoc broke the game open in the bottom of the 6th when they scored four runs off hits by Steve Rhoads, Jeff Rhoads, Derek Nelson and Mike Mitchell. Falls added a run in the 7th and 8th but Oconomowoc was able to score three runs in their half of each of those innings stretching the lead to 15-4. After three runs by Falls in the top of the 9th, the game was over.
Chris Fischer earned the win for Oconomowoc going 6.1 innings allowing three runs (two earned) on six hits while walking five, striking out two and hitting a batter. Tyler Zimmer came in for relief going 1.2 innings allowing one run on two hits while walking one and striking out one. And in a performance that can only be described as a back-handed insult to pitchers everywhere, Bob Bolson came in the "close the game down" going one inning, allowing three runs on three hits while walking two and somehow striking out one. Reports surfaced stating former Milwaukee Brewer Don August was vomiting in the Falls dugout during the top of the 9th. He was later quoted as saying he would give up all his memories from his entire major league pitching career if in exchange he could unsee what he saw from Bolson in the 9th. At the plate Oconomowoc was led by Jeff Rhoads who was 3 for 6 with a double and four RBIs, Derek Nelson who was 3 for 4 with an RBI and Steve Rhoads who was 3 for 3 with a walk and RBI.
The wins put Oconomowoc at 8-1 in the LOL West, still tied for first place with the Brookfield Bulldogs. The return to Tri County action this Thursday before taking on West Bend at home on Sunday in LOL action at 1:00 pm.
