Nelson Pitches Gem to Beat Bulldogs 3-2

7/18/2009 Print this page
The Five O's traveled to Brookfield on Saturday in a huge battle between teams tied for first place in the LOL West. Luke Nelson stepped up for Oconomowoc and threw a complete game only allowing two runs against one of the leagues best offenses. The game remained scoreless for the first three innings before Oconomowoc put two runs on the board in the top of the 4th. Jeff Rhoads led off with a drag bunt single and advanced to second on a throwing error. After a strikeout, Mike Mitchell doubled down the left field line to score Rhoads. Later in the inning with two outs, Mike Bolson dropped a single into short left field to score Mitchell putting the score at 2-0. Brookfield cut the lead to 2-1 in the bottom of the 6th when Jason Rutz led off the inning with a single, stole second and then scored on a single by Brett Summers. The Five O's got that run back in the top of the 7th when Chandler Ziemann hit a 2-out single to left field scoring Mike Bolson who had walked earlier in the inning. The Bulldogs waiting until the bottom of the 9th to make things interesting. Luke Nelson hit Scott Booth to start the inning and Brandon Reddinger then doubled to put runners on second and third and the winning run at the plate with no outs. The leagues leading hitter Mike Jacobs then flew out to shallow left to put one out on the board. A groundout chopper over the mound scored Booth from third and made it 3-2 with the winning run 90 feet away. Luke then struck out Eric Iverson to nail down the 3-2 win.
Luke went all nine innings for Oconomowoc allowing two runs on eight hits while walking no one, striking out nine and hitting one batter. Mark Erickson took the loss for The Bulldogs. At the plate Oconomowoc was led by Jeff Rhoads who was 3 for 3 with a walk.
The win puts Oconomowoc at 12-2 in the LOL West in a two-way tie for first with Lannon. They travel to Merton tomorrow for a matchup against the Am Vets at 1:00 pm.
