O's stumble in season opener
May 5, 1993
The Oconomowoc Five O's ship of success was hijacked in a Land O'Lakes League Western Division season-opening game on Sunday as the Pewaukee Pirates took a 20-7 victory.
As in a loss to Pewaukee last season, the O's hampered themselves as they committed six errors on the way to a 10-0 deficit.
Pewaukee took a 2-0 lead in the third inning before Pirate left fielder Phil McQuade ripped a three-run home run in the bottom of the fourth.
"We just beat ourselves," said player/manager Jason Brown, whose team allowed 10 unearned runs in the contest.
Oconomowoc was held scoreless through the first five innings by Pewaukee starting pitcher Gary Busch.
In the O's sixth, Steve Smith reached on an error and Steve Rhoads doubled before Brown connected with a two-RBI single.
Any hope of an Oconomowoc comeback failed, however, when Pewaukee scored four times in the seventh and added four more runs in the eighth.
"We tried to come out and put last year behind us but it came back and slapped us in the face," said Rhoads. "Now next week's game (Sussex at Oconomowoc) is very important."
The Oconomowoc Five O's have some help on the way for Sundays 1:30 p.m. home game against Sussex as first baseman/pitcher Greg Hackbart will be available to play.
The O's are hoping a season-opening loss to Pewaukee in which they committed six errors was an aberration and not part of a pattern.
Can the O's get on a winning track?
Perhaps the answer is in the counsel of the Greek philosopher Pericles, who said, "Wait for that wisest of all counselors - time."
