Five O's edged before routing Merton

On Sunday, the Oconomowoc Five O's traveled to Merton, where the ball park's defining characteristic is a lumber yard just beyond the right field fence.
However, it was the O's who were figuratively swinging the heavy wood as they sawed off the Merton A's 28-3 in a Land O'Lakes Western Division game that ended after five innings.
"We wanted to get rid of some of yesterday's frustration," said Oconomowoc player/manager Jason Brown, whose team improved to 4-3 for the first half of the split season. "We came out and put on an incredible offensive display."
With the power and ruthlessness of a circular rip saw, Oconomowoc put six runs on the board in the first inning as Ron Meunier and Steve Smith each drilled a home run.
In an unforgettable second inning, the O's nailed Merton pitching for 18 runs as Steve Rhoads, Greg Hackbart, and Kevin Brown each hit a homer.
Sunday's victory over Merton was a welcome restoration for Oconomowoc, which lost 6-5 to division defending champion Lannon on Saturday.
The O's fell behind 3-1 in the first inning, including a steal of a home by Lannon shortstop Jim Barwick.
The call was argued by Oconomowoc pitcher John Anderson and acting player/manager Steve Smith. Anderson was eventually ejected from the game and Greg Hackbart took the mound.
Oconomowoc rallied to lead 4-3 before Lannon came back to take a 6-4 margin on Whitney McCurdy's home run.
The O's scraped out another run but were unable to get one more.
