Oconomowoc's Mike Michalsky slides into second base as Genesee shortstop Scoll Meeth waits for the throw in Sunday's Land O'Lakes game at Roosevelt Field
The Oconomowoc Five O's returned to the friendly confines of Roosevelt Field for the first time in almost a month and treated the fans to a thrilling 6-5 victory over Genesee in a Land O'Lakes Western Division game.
The O's grabbed a 1-0 lead on a home run by center fielder Mike Michalsky in the first inning but Genesee countered with three runs in the second.
It was an ominous sign because the O's had not come from behind to win a game all season.
However, Oconomowoc tied the contest in the third as Neil Dussault drew a walk and stole second base before Ron Meunier and Michalsky followed with consecutive singles and then Jeff Ranta added a sacrafice fly.
Oconomowoc took the lead in the fourth as player/manager Jason Brown legged out an infield hit and scored on a single by Dussault.
The O's padded their margin in the fifth when Ranta walked, stole second, and scored on starting pitcher Greg Hackbart's single.
In the seventh Genesee sliced the lead to 5-4 as Rebel second sacker Brad Michaelis scored on a passed ball. The call was disputed by Brown, who was eventually ejected.
Genesee tied the contest in the eighth with an unearned run off Kevin Brown, who had come on in relief of Hackbart.
In the Oconomowoc ninth, Dussault singled and advanced to third on two Genesee errors. Then Michalsky lifted a sacrafice fly to center to bring home the winning run.
"We came through in the clutch, especially the top of the order," said Jason Brown. "We kept our heads up and didn't let ourselves get down after they tied it."
Oconomowoc, now 3-2 in the first half of the split season, is hoping to make the division race more interesting by winning its next two games at defending champion Lannon June 12 and at Merton June 13.
