O's work OT for first win
May 19, 1993

Call it a character win.
After dropping their first two outings of the season, the Oconomowoc Five O's were desperate for a win and got one with an 14-9, 11 innings victory over Monches in a Land O'Lakes Western Division game on Sunday.
"It's a big relief," said Oconomowoc player/manager Jason Brown, who recorded his first league victory. "The monkey is off the back."
Steve Smith, who has four career home runs at Monches, singled to drive in Brad Appleman with the eventual winning run.
Appleman had led off the inning with a single and then stole second base.
The O's, who had not stolen a base in their first two games this season, swiped 12.
Behind the singing swords of Brown, Jeff Ranta, and Steve Rhoads, who each drove in four runs, and the solid pitching of Chad Brown, the O's jumped out to a 7-0 lead.
In the top of the ninth, Appleman's bunt single gave Oconomowoc a 9-7 lead before Jim Truckenbrod's sacrifice fly sent the game into overtime.
Rhoads, who had taken over the pitching duty for Brown in the eighth inning, picked up the win.
Stumbling around in the dark hours before the dawn, the Oconomowoc Five O's suffered a 13-6 loss to Sussex in a Land O'Lakes Western Division game on May 9.
Just like in the season opener against Pewaukee, Oconomowoc dug itself in a 10-0 hold after the three innings.
Sussex was aided by the O's suicidal defensive tendencies, who led to four errors and six unearned runs.
Oconomowoc relief pitcher Greg Hackbart came on in the fourth inning for starter Chad Brown and threw three solid frames.
Then Steve Rhoads followed up, allowing just one unearned run.
Oconomowoc bat's - which were almost dormant the previous week - again started slowly.
Left fielder Kevin Brown tallied the O's first hit with a double in the fourth inning before Steve Smith's single scored Troy Saeger in the sixth.
Trailing 13-1 in the seventh, the Oconomowoc offense finally woke up.
Noting that Oconomowoc "won" the final six innings, Oconomowoc player/manager Jason Brown would like to see his team wake up earlier.
"We played great at the end," said Brown. "We've just got to get out of the blocks quicker."
