Oconomowoc Hands Sussex First Loss of Season

The Five O's handed Sussex their first LOL loss of the season on Sunday with a 4-2 win over the Cardinals. Oconomowoc got a spectacular start from pitcher Justin Mortensen who went seven innings allowing no runs on three hits to the powerful bats of Sussex. Both teams pitchers were throwing well with Oconomowoc striking first by scoring a run in the bottom of the 4th. Luke Nelson led off with a single and was able to advance all the way to third on a sac bunt by Jeff Rhoads. The next batter, Derek Nelson, then singled him home. In the 6th Oconomowoc added another run to take a 2-0 lead when Mike Bolson drew a full count walk with the bases loaded to bring home Derek Nelson who had singled earlier in the inning. In the 7th the Five O's extended their lead to 4-0 on a 2-run blast by Luke Nelson. Derek Nelson came in to relieve Mortensen and Sussex was able to get a run back on a single and two walks off Nelson. Luke Nelson came in the record the final out in the 8th and in the 9th Sussex got another run and had the tieing run on second when Nelson struck out the final two batters to end the game and seal the win for Oconomowoc.
Justin Mortensen earned the win for Oconomowoc improving to 3-0 on the season going seven innings allowing no runs on three hits while walking three and striking out five. Derek Nelson went 2/3 of an inning allowing one run on one hit while walking two. Luke Nelson picked up the save going 1 1/3 innings allowing one run on three hits while walking none and striking out two. At the plate Oconomowoc was led by Derek Nelson who was 3 for 4 with an RBI. Luke Nelson was 2 for 4 with a home run and two RBIs.
The win puts Oconomowoc at 3-1 in the LOL West which is a half game back behind Pewaukee. They travel to Juneau on Wednesday to take on Farmington in Tri County action before playing at Lannon on Saturday at 2:00 pm and home against the Brookfield Blue Sox on Sunday at 1:00 pm.
