In Oconomowoc's first extra inning game of the year, they edged out The Merton Amvets 7-5 in 10 innings in LOL action on Sunday. Merton starter Sam Muckley kept Oconomowoc hitters in check for most of the game while Five O's pitchers struggled walking 11 batters in the contest. Merton got on the board first with a run in the bottom of the 2nd putting them up 1-0. Oconomowoc was able to grab the lead 2-1 by scoring two runs in the top of the 4th with hits by Jeff Rhoads, Derek Nelson, Steve Rhoads and a sac fly by Mike Mitchell. The added another run in the top of the 5th putting the score at 3-1 before Merton regained the lead by sending 10 batters to the plate in the bottom half of the inning making the score 5-3. Things remained that way until the top of the 7th when Josh Fenzl led off the inning with a walk and was moved to second on a bunt by Bob Bolson. Luke Nelson later doubled off the wall to score Fenzl and Jeff Rhoads then singled to score Luke Nelson, tieing the game. Merton's best chance to regain the lead was in the bottom of the 7th when they loaded the bases but were unable to score. Things remained that way until the 10th inning when Merton brought in Kevin Birdeau who gave up three hits and a walk to give Oconomowoc a 7-5 lead. After a lead off walk in the bottom of the 10th, Luke Nelson came in to face two batters and record the save.
Chris Fischer earned the win for Oconomowoc going 4.1 innings allowing no runs on one hit while walking four and striking out two. Justin Mortensen threw the first 5.1 innings and allowed five runs (four earned) on five hits while walking eight and striking out three. Luke Nelson earned the save going .2 innings allowing no runs on no hits and striking out one. At the plate Oconomowoc was led by Jeff Rhoads who was 4 for 5 with two RBIs. Derek Nelson had two hits in the win.
The win puts Oconomowoc at 5-2, tied for first place with the Brookfield Blue Sox. They travel to Johnson Creek for the first round of SWABA Tournament (7:30 pm) before returning to LOL action on Sunday at Sussex (1:00 pm).
