Sussex Hands Five Os Second LOL Loss of Year

The Five Os lost their first home game in the 2005 season to the hands of The Sussex Cardinals who defeated the Five Os 11-10 in the snow storm delayed season opener on May 1, 2005 and are 6-2 against the Five Os over the last four years. Sussex scored three runs in the top of the ninth inning for a 7-5 win in the 95+ degree heat Sunday. Cardinals winning pitcher Matt Kopp, who got the win in four innings of relief in the May game, went the distance giving up five earned runs on 12 hits with two walks, three hit batters and nine stirke outs. Nick Ghelfi, who was 2 for 5 with two runs in May, was 3 for 4 with three RBIs including a double that scored Cory Gasper, who had a leadoff double, to tie the game at 5-5. After a walk to Seth Kroenke and stolen base, DH Vic Erato had a two run RBI single for the game winning runs.

The Cardinals took a 2-0 lead in the third inning with a leadoff walk to ninth hitter Garrett Tetzlaff, single by C Gasper and RBI singles by Ghelfi and Jim Kais. The Five Os scored one run in the fourth innng with an RBI single by Jeff Rhoads after a double by James Schlosser. Brother Tim Schlosser, who was hit by a pitch, was thrown out at the plate on J Schlosser's double on perfect relay throws from Kroenke to Ryan Gasper to Kais. Sussex scored single runs in the sixth and seventh as Luke Plese had a two out single, stole second and scored on an error and C Gasper, who had three hits, singled, stole second and scored on Ghelfi's single for a 4-1 lead. The Five Os scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh to take a 5-4 lead. Mike Mitchell and Steve Rhoads singled. After two outs, T Schlosser was hit by a pitch to load the bases. James Schlosser had an RBI walk, J Rhoads had an RBI single and Nelson had a two run single. Rob Becker took the hard luck loss going eight innings with six runs, five earned, on 11 hits, four walks and two strike outs. Nelson gave up one run in one inning with a hit, walk and strike out.

The Five Os at 10-2 are in second place one half game behind Hartland at 11-2. The two teams have a make up game to be played. Hartland is at Lannon on Sunday 7/24/05. Oconomowoc is at Brookfield.
