Five Os Clinch Western Division Title

8/6/05
In a battle of first place teams, the Five Os scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to defeat Hartland 5-4 at Roosevelt Park on Saturday. Steve Rhoads walked to lead off the ninth inning for Oconomowoc. James Schlosser attempted a sacrifice bunt to advance Mike Eppler, running for S Rhoads. Both runners were safe on a high throw to second. After a strike out, Jeff Rhoads lined an RBI double to left center scoring Eppler and tie the game at 4-4. After debating whether to walk Derek Nelson to load the bases for Sean Smith who hit four home runs last weekend, a wild pitch ended the game as J Schlosser raced home.
Hartland scored three runs in the top of the first inning on a single by Dave Hubka, Tim Mertin reached base on a fielder's choice and both scored on a double by Brian Henschel. Henschel scored on a two out double by Nate Gray. The Oilers increased the lead to 4-0 in the third inning as Hubka reached on an error and scored on a two out single by Mike Greberczyk for the Oilers last run of the game. Winning pitcher Rob Becker gave up only three hits and walk the rest of the game with no one getting past second base. The Five Os cut the score to 4-3 in the bottom of the third inning as J Schlosser had a lead off double and scored on brother Tim Schlosser's single. Jeff Rhoads singled, Sean Smith singled home T Schlosser. Smith scored from second base on an attempted pick off throw from the catcher on Mike Mitchell at first base when the throw got away.
Becker got the win to improve to 6-1 in the Land O Lakes giving up four runs, three earned, on seven hits, a walk and a season high nine strike outs. Hartland's manager, Mark Fiala, started and pitched well giving up only three runs, two earned, on eight hits, a walk, hot batter and two strike outs in 7 plus innings. Reliever Brian Henschel entered in the eighth inning with a runner on first base, hit a batter and then struck out the side. Henschel took the loss giving up two runs, one earned, a hit, walk, hit batter and four strike outs in 1 1/3 innings. The Five Os sweep the regular season series with Hartland and defeated Henschel both games.
Oconomowoc needs to win one of the next two games to take first place in the LOL Western Division. The Five Os host Menomonee Falls on Sunday and travel to Pewaukee next Saturday. Second place Hartland 13-3 plays at Sussex 12-4 on Sunday. Sussex and Lannon 12-4 still have a shot at second place. The first two teams in the Division earn a bye in the playoffs that start on Sunday 8/14/05.
