In a battle of first place teams, the Five Os scored two runs in the
bottom of the ninth inning to defeat Hartland 5-4 at Roosevelt Park on
Saturday. Steve Rhoads walked to lead off the ninth inning for
Oconomowoc. James Schlosser attempted a sacrifice bunt to advance Mike
Eppler, running for S Rhoads. Both runners were safe on a high throw
to second. After a strike out, Jeff Rhoads lined an RBI double to left
center scoring Eppler and tie the game at 4-4. After debating whether
to walk Derek Nelson to load the bases for Sean Smith who hit four home
runs last weekend, a wild pitch ended the game as J Schlosser raced
home.
Hartland scored three runs in the top of the first inning on a single
by Dave Hubka, Tim Mertin reached base on a fielder's choice and both
scored on a double by Brian Henschel. Henschel scored on a two out
double by Nate Gray. The Oilers increased the lead to 4-0 in the third
inning as Hubka reached on an error and scored on a two out single by
Mike Greberczyk for the Oilers last run of the game. Winning pitcher
Rob Becker gave up only three hits and walk the rest of the game with
no one getting past second base. The Five Os cut the score to 4-3 in the
bottom of the third inning as J Schlosser had a lead off double and
scored on brother Tim Schlosser's single. Jeff Rhoads singled, Sean
Smith singled home T Schlosser. Smith scored from second base on an
attempted pick off throw from the catcher on Mike Mitchell at first base
when the throw got away. Becker got the win to improve to 6-1 in the Land O Lakes giving up four
runs, three earned, on seven hits, a walk and a season high nine strike
outs. Hartland's manager, Mark Fiala, started and pitched well giving
up only three runs, two earned, on eight hits, a walk, hot batter and
two strike outs in 7 plus innings. Reliever Brian Henschel entered in
the eighth inning with a runner on first base, hit a batter and then
struck out the side. Henschel took the loss giving up two runs, one
earned, a hit, walk, hit batter and four strike outs in 1 1/3 innings.
The Five Os sweep the regular season series with Hartland and defeated
Henschel both games.
Oconomowoc needs to win one of the next two games to take first place
in the LOL Western Division. The Five Os host Menomonee Falls on Sunday
and travel to Pewaukee next Saturday. Second place Hartland 13-3 plays
at Sussex 12-4 on Sunday. Sussex and Lannon 12-4 still have a shot at
second place. The first two teams in the Division earn a bye in the
playoffs that start on Sunday 8/14/05. 8/7/05
Oconomowoc clinched first place for the regular season in the Land O
Lakes Western Division with a 6-1 win over visiting Menomonee Falls on
Sunday. Kirk Ressler improved to 6-0 in the LOL and 12-3 overall in
101 innings for the Five Os season. Ressler gave up one run on six
hits and four strike outs in seven innings. Mike Mitchell lead the
offense with a two run home run in the fourth inning and RBI sacrifice
fly in the sixth inning. The Five Os scored the first run in the
third inning as Kevin Raasch singled, advance to second on a sacrifice by
Steve Rhoads and scored on a double by Tim Schlosser. Sean Smith
doubled prior to Mitchell's home run in the fourth for the 3-0 lead.
The Lakers scored their lone run in the top of the sixth on a lead off
single by Jeff Lueck, went to third on the second double by Max Wittlin
and scored on a sacrifice fly by Curt Weiskirch. Oconomowoc came back
with two runs in the bottom of the sixth as Derek Nelson tripled which
was the second triple of the year for the team. After Smith walked,
Mitchell hit a sacrifice fly to score Nelson. Pete Schlosser reached on an error sending Smith to third, who later scored on a wild pitch.
The Five Os added a final run in the seventh on three singles by James
Schlosser, J Rhoads and Nelson.
Lueck and Wittlin had two hits each for the Lakers. Nelson, Smith and
and Raasch had two hits each for Oconomowoc. Smith scored two runs.
Mitchell had a home run and three RBIs. Neary pitched the final two
innings for the Five Os. Former Milwaukee Brewer's Don August went
eight innings with six runs on 11 hits, a walk and six strike outs in
the loss.
Oconomowoc earned a bye with the win and will play at home on Sunday,
August 20th at 1 PM. The opponent will be determined based on playoff
games on August 14th. Oconomowoc has a one game lead over second
place Hartland with one game to go and has the tie breaker based on two wins
over the Oilers in the regular season. The Five Os finished second
to the Oilers in the 2004 regular season. The Five Os complete the
regular season at Pewaukee on Saturday, August 13th. It appears the
Five Os will play Pardeeville in the Tri County Nite League Playoffs.
The date, time and site has not been determined. The Braves defeated
the Fives 15-10 in a regular season game on 7/22/05 at Pardeeville. An
updated schedule is attached.
