In a brilliant pitchers dual, Oconomowoc was led by Matt Schref to a 3-0 win over Horicon on Wednesday night in Tri County action. Despite yet another strictly enforced pitch count, Matt threw the complete game shutout allowing only 7 hits (all of which were singles), striking out 4 and not walking a single batter. Matt was helped with a solid defense behind him, the 7th time this year the O's defense turned in an error-free game. Starting catcher Jeff Rhoads also threw out both base runners who tried to steal on him. Perhaps one of the biggest plays in the field came from Matt himself. In the bottom of the second inning with Horicon runners on first and third, Matt picked off the runner on first base. With two outs, the batter then hit a weak ground ball for the third out, a ball that would have definitely scored the runner from third if there were less than two outs. This kept the game scoreless and gave Oconomowoc momentum.
Scoring for Oconomowoc came in the 4th inning when Derek Nelson hit a one-out double and was moved to third on a single by second baseman Steve Rhoads. With one out, center fielder Erik Olson then hit a sacrifice fly to score Derek. A double by Dan Schlosser later in the inning and a fielding error pushed the Five Os second run across. The final run for Oconomowoc came in the 7th inning when Tim Schlosser led off with a walk (the only walk of the game by both pitchers). Shawn Tremaine bunted over Tim and he was then moved to third on a Horicon error. With one out, Derek Nelson then hit a deep sacrifice fly to center to score Tim. Leading hitters for Oconomowoc were brothers Jeff and Steve Rhoads, each with two hits.
The win puts Oconomowoc at 7-1 in the Tri County Night League and 19-2 overall. They have two huge LOL games this weekend with a game at Menomonee Falls on Saturday at 2:30 pm and at Pewaukee on Sunday at 1:00 pm. Menomonee Falls handed Oconomowoc one of it's two losses earlier this year.
