The Five Os had to scrape together a team on Saturday against Sussex, but were able to still pull out the win. After a delay starting the game because the umpires did not show, Sussex struck first getting an unearned run in the bottom of the 1st off starter Luke Nelson. Oconomowoc was able to tie the game up in the top of the third when Luke Nelson led off with a single and then was scored on a double by Derek Nelson. However, Sussex answered with a run of their own in the bottom of the third. They tacked on another run in the 4th and 5th for a 4-1 lead. Oconomowoc began chipping away and got one back in the top of the 6th. With one out, Erik Olson singled with one out. Tyler Zimmer then reached on a throwing error which put runners at the corners with one out. Bob Bolson hustled out a ground ball to beat out a double play attempt which scored Olson. In the 7th inning Oconomowoc got another one back when Luke Nelson led off the inning with a double. He tagged up to third on a fly ball to center by Jeff Rhoads and then scored on a sacrifice fly by Derek Nelson. This put the score at 4-3. Oconomowoc scored the tying and eventual game winning runs in the top of the 8th when Erik Olson and Tyler Zimmer both singled to lead off the inning. A sacrifice bunt by Bob Bolson put runners at second and third. It appears Sussex may have gotten out of a jam when pitcher Matt Kopp struck out Shawn Tremaine and got Luke Nelson to hit a ground ball to short. Things turned in Oconomowoc's favor when the throw got away from first baseman Vic Erato allowing Olson and Zimmer to score. Luke shut the door the final two innings and Oconomowoc took the win 5-4.
The win puts Oconomowoc at 22-7 overall and 13-4 in the LOL West. Luke Nelson earned the win for Oconomowoc. Luke threw a complete game giving up 3 earned runs, walking 1, striking out 4 and allowing 8 hits. Taking the loss for Sussex was Matt Kopp who also threw a complete game. At the plate, the Five Os were led by Luke Nelson and Jeff Rhoads. Each were 3 for 5 with a double. Erik Olson was 2 for 3 and newcomer Tyler Zimmer was 2 for 4 and also scored the game winning run.
Oconomowoc's next match up is against North Lake on Sunday. Game time is 1:00 pm in North Lake.
