Five Os Earn Memorial Weekend Sweep

The Five Os opened up the Memorial Day weekend with a pivotal LOL West matchup against the Brookfield Blue Sox. Going into the game, the Five Os were tied for first place in the LOL West with a 4-0 record and the Blue Sox were one game behind at 3-1. Veteran right-hander Rob Becker stepped up to deliver a magnificent 2-hit complete game to lead Oconomowoc to a 9-0 win. The game was scoreless going into the top of the 4th when Oconomowoc first struck. Derek Nelson led off the inning with a double to right and scored two batters later on another double by Steve Rhoads. Steve later scored in the inning on a sac fly by Mike Bolson to put Oconomowoc up 2-0. The Five Os added 2 more runs in the top of the 5th off a 2-RBI single by Jeff Rhoads, scoring Bob Bolson and Tyler Zimmer who had reached on an error and walk. One more run came in the top of the 6th to put Oconomowoc up 5-0 which is where the score remained until the top of the 9th which was capped off with a 3-run home run by Mike Mitchell.
Leading Oconomowoc was Rob Becker who threw a complete game, 2-hit, shutout. Becker walked 6 and stuck out 3 in the winning effort. Taking the loss was John Arnold. At the plate Oconomowoc was led by Jeff Rhoads who was 3 for 5 with a run scored and 2 RBIs. Mike Mitchell and Steve Rhoads each had 2 hits.

Riding the momentum from Saturday's win over the Blue Sox, the Five Os smashed Merton 14-3 on Sunday. Both teams traded runs in the 1st inning before Oconomowoc took the lead 6-3 after 3 innings. The scoring ended there for Merton but Oconomowoc added 8 more runs in the next 6 innings to earn the win. Earning the win on the mound was Matt Schref who went 5 innings allowing 3 earned runs, walking 2 and striking out 3. Luke Nelson came in to work the last 4 innings only giving up 1 hit, walking none and striking out 8. Oconomowoc was led at the plate by Jeff Rhoads who was 4 for 5 with a double, walk and RBI. Derek Nelson went 3 for 5 with a double, walk and 3 RBIs.
Oconomowoc next travels to Pardeeville on Friday to compete in Tri County action. They then will face their most important game of the year with a battle of the unbeatens when they host the Brookfield Bulldogs in LOL action on Sunday. The winner of the game will have sole possession of 1st place in the LOL West. Game time Friday night is 8:00 pm and game time on Sunday afternoon is 1:00 pm.

Mendoza Watch Heats Up
In other news, with the Mendoza Watch heating up, ex-Pittsburgh Pirate second baseman Mario Mendoza has make his first public comment dealing on the topic. As to what he might be doing when Bolson falls below the Mendoza line, he said, "I have no idea, probably playing golf somewhere." Mendoza has drawn a great deal of media criticism for not offering to attend the historic game.
