Five Os Go 1-1 in Grand Championship Opening Weekend

In their first trip back to the Grand Championship since 1999, the Five Os went 1-1 in the opening weekend and are still alive for the title. Things did not start well for Oconomowoc on Sunday at Butler. After each team went down 1-2-3 in the first inning, Five Os starter Rob Becker hit the first three batters to load the bases in the bottom of the second. All runners eventually came around to score and after two innings, Oconomowoc had a 4-0 defecit. Butler added two more runs in the 3rd which proved to be all the scoring for the afternoon. Butler's pitching shut down Oconomowoc's bats all afternoon, allowing only two hits all game. Luke Nelson and Derek Nelson were the only Oconomowoc hitters to card a hit. When the day was over, the Five Os lot 6-0 and had fallen to 0-1 in the 2007 Grand Championship.
On Sunday the Five Os returned home Sunday to face Cedarburg who had beaten Waterford on Saturday. The Five Os fell behind early again when Nolan Gilbertson hit a 2-run home run in the top of the 1st off starter Luke Nelson. However, unlike Saturday, Oconomowoc was able to wake up their bats and come back to beat Cedarburg 10-2. Oconomowoc scored one in the bottom of the first to cut the lead to 2-1. Things remained that way until the Five Os broke out in the bottom of the 4th for 8 runs and sent 14 batters to the plate. After giving up two runs in the top of the 1st, Luke Nelson shut down the Cedarburg offense the rest of the game only allowing four hits and no runs the remainder of the game.
Leading Oconomowoc at the plate on Sunday was Steve Rhoads who was 3 for 5 with a double and 2 RBIs. Jeff Rhoads and Mike Bolson had 2 hits each.
